At Reeds we believe that our print should have impact on the eye and not the environment and we endeavour to act in an environmentally friendly manner to minimise any possible damage caused to the environment - either directly or indirectly.
This was officially recognised in May 2008 by the awarding of ISO 14001:2004 certification as well as Gold Award status awarded by Cumbria Business Environmental Network. In October of 2008 we had our first 6 month audit and are pleased to say that we passed with flying colours.
ISO14001 is the internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems and Reeds are now one of only a handful of printers in the North West who have gained the coveted standard. Certification came after months of hard work, site visits, internal and external audits etc. and our aim now is not only hold on to ISO14001 but to try to be ahead of it!

Reeds Printers has been certified to ISO14001:2004 for the following scope - the environmental
management of all opertations at the Penrith site, including design, lithographic, digital and flexographic
printing and finishing opertaions.
Certification is subject to periodic surveillance and re-assessment.
For further information regarding the vailidity of the certification please contact Print and Medie Certification Ltd on info@printcertification.co.uk

CBEN Gold Award is only given to companies who have demonstrated a high level of
excellence in the identification, assessment and control of their environmental aspects/impacts
via an Environmental Management System.
Our next aim is to gain Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) status and we are currently working towards this with a view to having FSC in place by Winter 2008.
We have placed below some of the ways in which we try to work to lessen our impact on the environment -
- Given the choice we will choose materials that are, or can be, recycled and environmentally friendly.
- All chemicals used in the factory are approved substances and are re-cycled through licensed disposal companies.
- Our modern print presses take advantage of automatic wash-up technology that helps us to minimise the use of chemicals as well as using 50% less paper to 'make ready' the job.
- We monitor new legislation and products so instead of just keeping up with legislation we will, as far as practicably possible, try to be ahead of it. Our buyers don’t just buy the cheapest products but look for environmental friendliness and health and safety aspects of the product as well as the cost implications.
- Other schemes we follow to ensure the effectiveness of our environmentally friendly policy include the recycling or re-usage of packaging materials, recycling of all our waste paper and card, recycling of used pallets and packaging materials and the re-usage or recycling of all our printing plates.
- We also try group together deliveries to lower the number of trips our delivery vans undertake in order to lessen the environmental impact of vehicle emmisions.
- We also actively encourage our employees to recycle their food and drinks containers such as cans, plastic bottles, plastic bags etc via recycling boxes provided.
- We operate a 'Cycle To Work' scheme whereby we encourage our local staff to leave the car at home and cycle to work. This has the benefits of helping keep our employees fit as well as lessening the impact of vehicle emmissions on the environment.
Long gone are the days of strange colours and poor paper being the only option for customers wanting a “Green” product. That’s not to say that all printers are the same, but if you wish to work with a company that will produce outstanding print without it having a serious detrimental effect on the environment then you can be sure that Reed’s Printers are the right choice.
